How Do Sunless Tanning Products Work?
The main active ingredient in sunless tanning products is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that interacts with the proteins and amino acids in the outer layer of your skin, creating a golden-brown color through the "Maillard Reaction." This reaction is consistent, so DHA always produces the same results based on its concentration and application level. In addition to DHA, the all-natural sunless solution used at Bronzed Bella includes Organic Aloe Vera, Caprylic Triglyceride, and Hyaluronic Acid to moisturize and nourish your skin while your tan develops. Most sunless products also contain an immediate bronzer, which gives your skin an initial color right after application. This bronzer washes off in your first post-tanning shower, revealing your tan. Formulas can be custom-blended to suit your desired initial color, and I adjust the DHA level in your custom solution based on your skin type.
Is It Safe?
Yes, DHA is FDA-approved for use on non-mucosal areas of the skin. The FDA guidelines recommend using nose filters, eye protection, and lip balm during application. Allergic reactions are extremely rare, with the most common side effect being minor skin irritation in sensitive individuals. These reactions typically subside after a shower. If you're uncertain about a possible allergy to DHA, I’m happy to provide a small patch test 24 hours before a full-body application.
How Long Does a Sunless Tan Last?
With proper preparation and daily moisturizing, your tan should last about 7 to 10 days. People who shower more than once daily may notice their tan fading faster than those who shower once daily and use a non-petroleum moisturizer. As with any tan, a sunless tan fades as dead skin cells naturally shed. Proper hydration is key to maintaining your tan's longevity, and with proper care, it can last up to two weeks.
Can You Use Tanning Beds or Tan Outdoors in Conjunction with Sunless Tanning?
Absolutely! However, repeated exposure to UV light can lead to premature aging and skin cancers. While sunless tanning won’t provide UV protection, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential to prevent sunburn and skin damage. It's important to note that excessive sun exposure or UV tanning may shorten the life of your sunless tan.
Can I Spray Tan if I Have a Sunburn?
It's not recommended. Sunburned skin is inflamed and will develop a tan unevenly, often leading to patchy fading. As the skin heals, it becomes more dehydrated and may peel, which disrupts the tan. Once the sunburn heals, you can enjoy a spray tan, but it won't adhere properly to damaged skin. The best prevention is consistent use of sunscreen.
How Should I Prepare for My Tanning Session?
Exfoliate using an exfoliating mitt (only) before your session to remove dead skin cells and body oils, which can interfere with the tanning solution. Avoid bar soaps and moisturizing cleansers as they leave residue. Refrain from using moisturizers before tanning, as they can clog pores and reduce the tan's effectiveness. I'll apply a hydrating barrier cream to dry areas such as elbows, knees, and feet to prevent them from becoming too dark, and a pH balance spray to prepare your skin for the tan. Be sure to remove makeup and deodorant, as these can affect absorption.
What Should I Wear to My Session?
For your appointment: You may wear a bathing suit, but I recommend using an old one as tanning solution will inevitably get on it. I provide disposable underwear and bras at the studio. Female clients over 18 may tan topless or nude, while male clients should wear bottoms—fitted boxer briefs work best. Clients under 18 need parental approval and must tan in full swimwear or bra and underwear. I strive to make you feel as comfortable as possible with whatever you choose to wear. After your appointment: Wear loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing and flip-flops or slip-on shoes. Tight clothing like denim, sports bras, or anything that rubs the skin may affect the tan’s development. Clothes that leave marks will leave marks on your tan, and bronzer color that transfers will typically wash out in the first laundry cycle, but it's not guaranteed. Choose your post-tan attire carefully.
Will I Have Tan Lines?
That depends on what you wear during the session. We recommend wearing an old, dark swimsuit or undergarments. Some clients buy an inexpensive swimsuit dedicated to tanning. Disposable underwear and bras are provided for your convenience.
How Can I Care for My Sunless Tan?
To prolong your tan, avoid water and activities that cause excessive sweating until your first post-tanning shower. Afterward, keep your skin hydrated with a moisturizer free of petroleum, mineral oil, and paraffin. Avoid products with Vitamin C, retinol, or other exfoliants, as they speed up skin turnover. Limit exposure to the elements to avoid drying out your skin. Use a sulfate-free body wash and avoid scrubbing your skin with loofahs or washcloths. Pat dry after showering or swimming. These steps will help maintain your tan's look and longevity.
Can I Tan if I’m Pregnant?
With your obstetrician’s approval, sunless tanning is generally considered safe for pregnant women when done in a well-ventilated space. However, the final decision should be made by you and your physician.
How Long Does a Spray Tan Take?
A typical full-body session takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Partial body services are quicker. Plan for extra time during your first visit for preparation and to familiarize yourself with the process.
Why Is Airbrush Application Superior to Booths or Self-Tan Application?
Airbrush application is more precise, allowing for a smooth and even tan. Special care can be taken to avoid overapplying the solution to areas like elbows, knees, and hairlines. Spray booths, on the other hand, apply the solution evenly but don’t account for individual needs, and the consumer has little control over where the solution lands. Hand application can result in streaky color and stained hands. Airbrush tanning provides a much more controlled and flawless result, making it the superior option. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to help!
